NMGPA is Common Cause New Mexico’s new scorecard for legislators on good government issues like money in politics, transparency, ethics and voter access. It is based on a concept familiar to all of us, a grade point average.
Every legislative session, New Mexico legislators have a chance to advance the cause of good governance … or not. Common Cause New Mexico tracks each and every action taken by legislators on good/bad governance bills – whether that action is a committee vote or a floor vote.
At the end of each session, legislators receive a GPA based on how many times they did the right thing. (For example, if a legislator had 15 opportunities to either support good governance bills or oppose bad governance bills and she did the right thing 14 times, her GPA would be 14/15 or 93% -- a Solid A-)
Over time, New Mexico citizens will be able to see their legislators’ NMGPA each session as well as their lifetime GPA.
